Title: Compilation of computerized indexes - Need for broader guidelines and criteria
Authors: Taneja, Ram D; Saxena, Vinod K
Abstract: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:
115%;font-family:" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";="" mso-ansi-language:en-us;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" lang="EN-US">Describes
the introduction of a new concept of computerized indexes. Surveys the problems
arising from the compilation of such indexes with reference to Keyword Index to
the Handbook of ISI Publications. Discusses the need for revision of IS: 1275-1958
'Rules for making alphabetical Indexes ' in the light of this new concept and
establishing certain guidelines and criteria for the compilation of basic data
for such indexes.</span>

Title: Preparation of indexes
Authors: Raizada, A S; Arora, A M; Elhence, D
Abstract: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:

is an essential activity in any information and documentation service. Computerized
indexing yield economical, faster and accurate results. Enumerates the areas of
further work in computerized indexing. Presents cost analysis for preparing
monthly and yearly indexes to Indian Science Abstracts.</span>

Formalizing by symbolic library logic problems

Title: Formalizing by symbolic library logic problems
Authors: Chakraborty, A R
Abstract: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:
115%;font-family:" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";="" mso-ansi-language:en-us;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" lang="EN-US">Attempts
to formalize the statements in a library operation by means of symbolic logic
for stream lining further data processing operation. Uses the notation of both
the Principia and Polish system of Propositional Calculus. Illustrates the use of
Symbolic logic to common library search statements with the aid of truth
values. Demonstrate the simplification of a flow chart by truth table.
Manipulations like formula conversion and reduction were used to show their
help in streamlining library instruction manuals. The application of logical
possibilities for defining an optimum path in a complex network of library
operations has been hinted. Statements of very simple, idealized and trivial
problems are analyzed to determine their logical structure using basic logical
concepts and propositional calculus notation in step-by-step exposition.</span>

Approaches to automated in large academic systems libraries

Title: Approaches to automated in large academic systems libraries
Authors: Biswas, Subhas C
Abstract: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:
115%;font-family:" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";="" mso-ansi-language:en-us;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" lang="EN-US">The
first part of this paper considers three general approaches to the development
of an automation programme in large academic library. The library may decide
simply to wait for developments; it may attempt to develop a total or
integrated system from the start; or it may adopt an evolutionary approach
leading eventually to an integrated system. Outside consultants, it is
expected, will become increasingly important. The second part deals with
important elements in any programme regardless of the approach. These include
the working out the capability to do automation work, staffing, equipment,
feasibility study and costs.</span>
