Title: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-font-weight: bold" lang="EN-US">Assessment of heavy metals by ligand-less cloud point extraction in sediment and Holothuria parva (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea)
Authors: Givianrad, Mohammad-Hadi; Larijani, Kambiz; Jamili, Shahla; Adeli, Behjat
Abstract: The concentrations of
heavy metals were determined in organs of Holothuria parva and sediment
from three stations in the Qeshm, Iran. A ligand-less Cloud Point
Extraction (CPE) procedure was used for preconcentration of trace metals as
pretreatment step to determination of lead and cadmium by Graphite Furnace
Atomic absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS). Concentration of heavy metals in body
wall, gut and sediment were obtained 14.05, 5.72 and 41.66 µg/g for lead and
0.722, 0.493 and 3.27 µg/g for cadmium, respectively. Limit of detection (LOD)
values of lead and cadmium were 0.037 and 0.028 µg/g, respectively. Relative
standard deviation (RSD) for six replicate determinations of lead and cadmium
were 2.68% and 1.20%, respectively. Concentrations of lead and cadmium in
sediments and organs of sea cucumbers

differed significantly,
suggesting that this sea cucumber should not be considered as an ideal
bioindicator of lead and cadmium pollutants in the sediment.

Authors: Khan, Muhammad Naseem; Lin, Hong; Wang, Jingxue; Li, Meng; Mirani, Zulfiqar Ali
Abstract: In this study, marine isolate DK1-SA11 was identified
and analyzed for antagonistic activity against fish pathogen along with its
potential possible role as probiotic agent. The strain DK1-SA11 was identified
on the basis of rec-A gene sequence similarity analysis and phylogenetic
studies. Strain DK1-SA11 antagonistic activity against fish pathogens was
analyzed by oxford cup agar diffusion method. Acute toxicity assay of strain
DK1-SA11 with zebra fish (Danio rerio) was performed to evaluate the
safety of strain for its future potential application as probiotic in
aquaculture. recA gene sequencing analysis identified the strain as Bacillus
sbutilis subsp. spizizenii strain DK1-SA11. Furthermore, strain
DK1-SA11 has shown broad antagonistic activity against fish pathogens including
Aeromonas hydrophila, A. salmonicida, Vibrio alginolyticus,

V. anguillarum, V. campbellii, V. chagasii, V. chagasii,
Photobacterium damsela, V. diazotrophicus, V. harveyi,
V. ichthyoenteri, V. mediterranei, V. mimicus, V.
parahaemolyticus, V. pomeroyi, V. splendidus, V. tubiashii,
V. vulnificus and V. xuii. Acute toxicity results revealed that
strain has neither fatal nor visible toxic effect to fish and the lethal
concentration (LC50) of DK1-SA11 to the fish was > 108
CFU mL-1. Therefore, it has been concluded that Bacillus subtilis
subsp. spizizenii strain DK1-SA11 might be a putative strain for
prevention and control of fish and shellfish diseases, and could be use for
probiosis.

Title: Evaluation of water environmental capacity using a total optimized method — A case study of the guan river estuary in Jiangsu, China
Authors: Zhang, Wenhu; Li, Ruijie; Wang, Dejin; Shi, Jian; Luo, Feng
Abstract: Two pollution-creating sources adjacent to the Guan River Estuary (i.e.,
Guan River
and Xinyi River,
that fed into Guan
River at its mouth) were
investigated in this work. A mathematical model is established for simulation
analysis of the water environment of Guan River Estuary. Simulation results are verified with
measured data experimentally from 12 monitoring stations in July 2007. Annual pollutant discharge of the two rivers
were calculated, and the environmental capacity of Guan River Estuary was also
evaluated. The dynamic relations of
pollution-creating sources of the two rivers can result in the maximum amount
and optimal layout of pollution discharge of Guan
River and Xinyi River. Present study
reveals that amounts of N and P discharged into the two rivers were
substantially excessive, and adjacent water quality was below the third- and
fourth-class water standard of China.

Determination of oil and domestic pollution indicators on the southeastern Black Sea coastal water

Title: Determination of oil and domestic pollution indicators on the southeastern Black Sea coastal water
Authors: Gedik, Kenan; Boran, Muhammet; Alkan, Nigar
Abstract: Present study consists
the spatial and temporal distributions of some pollutants resulting from marine
and terrestrial activities were studied from the water column of the
southeastern Black Sea between November 2009
and October 2010. Observed concentrations of phenol (max. 14.21 μg/l), anionic
detergent (max. 28.80 μg/l), oil and grease (max. 102.90 mg/l), turbidity (max
20.20) and total suspended solids (max. 18.72 mg/l) in Black
Sea water samples indicated

irregular seasonal and
spatial distributions. Some of the toxic pollutants exceeded the marine water
quality criteria of Turkish Water Pollution and Control Regulation, suggesting
significant impact of marine and terrestrial activities on the coastal waters
of southeastern Black Sea. In sum, the levels
of pollutants measured in this study decrease from nearshore to offshore, and
the data show low variability with respect to depth. Accordingly, it can be
said that the study areas are significantly affected by anthropogenic additions
from wastewater discharge.
