Recovery and utilization of wash water solids generated during ilmenite leaching operation

Title: Recovery and utilization of wash water solids generated during ilmenite leaching operation
Authors: George, J; Nair, V V; Ninan, G; Nair, K
Abstract: The solid
content in the spent wash water generated during leaching operations in
chloride process for the production of TiO2 pigment is not recovered
and considered waste. A method is proposed for the recovery of the solids and
enrichment of titanium values in these solids. The composition of the recovered
and enriched solids is determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy and other
analytical techniques. The samples are characterized using X-ray diffraction
(XRD) and scanning electron microscope. (SEM). The pigmentary qualities of the
recovered material are studied in enamel paint formulations and compared
against commercial rutile TiO2 pigment. Partial replacement of the
TiO2 pigment with the recovered material has not made any
significant impact on the various characteristics studied and approached the
commercial rutile TiO2 pigment standards. Also partial replacement
realizes a TiO2 saving in enamel paint formulations.

Dynamic adsorption modeling study using a modified Redilch-Peterson isotherm model

Title: Dynamic adsorption modeling study using a modified Redilch-Peterson isotherm model
Authors: Suganya, E; Rangabhashiyam, S; Varghese, L A; Selvaraju, N
Abstract: The untreated
grey water generated by domestic activities is the major sanitation problem.
From the industrial point of view, the modeling approach of three parameter
isotherm model<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">
Redilch-Peterson based on the column system has been
considered. A theoretical one dimension dynamic model was proposed to
understand the behaviour in fixed bed, assuming Straight run mode to study the
phenomenon of adsorption.<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-GB">
Using MATLAB linear programming and least square method
the parameters involved have been optimized. Thus predicted results are
correlated with the theory and experimental observation available in the
literature using Mathematical derivation and MATLAB. Thus a <span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">modified Redilch-Peterson isotherm
model in packed bed for waste water treatment has been
proposed.

Power Quality Improvement of Grid Connected Solar System

Title: Power Quality Improvement of Grid Connected Solar System
Authors: Karunambigai, S; Geetha, K; Shabeer, H A
Abstract: The need to generate pollution free energy
has triggered the effect towards the usage of solar energy interconnection with
the grid. Consequently, the Photovoltaic [PV] panel interfaced with the grid
causes the power quality problems such as a harmonics, voltage sag etc., Active
power filters are the powerful tool for mitigation of harmonics. This proposed
work describes the methodology for improving power quality of the grid
interfaced with renewable energy. The inverter used in this methodology can
also be used as a power converter for injecting power from solar to grid along
with harmonic compensation. The proposed concept is validated through dynamic
simulation using MATLAB/Simulink Power system toolbox.

Extraction of bovine serum albumin using aqueous two-phase poly (ethylene glycol) – poly (acrylic acid) system

Title: Extraction of bovine serum albumin using aqueous two-phase poly (ethylene glycol) – poly (acrylic acid) system
Authors: Settu, S; Velmurugan, P; Jonnalagadda, R R; Nair, B U
Abstract: The partitioning behavior of bovine serum
albumin in a new aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) based on low cost commercial
polymers like poly (ethy1ene glycol) (PEG) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) has
been studied. In this ATPS, PAA and PEG are enriched in the bottom and upper
phase, respectively. The influence of <span style="mso-bidi-font-style:italic">molecular
weight (MW), tie line length, pH, temperatures and NaCl concentration on the
partition coefficient of protein has been studied. <span style="mso-bidi-font-style:italic">The protein partitioning decreases on
increasing MW of PEG and temperature, whereas increases with an increasing pH
and NaCl concentration. This may be attributed by strong electrostatic
interactions between the proteins and polymer as well as excluded volume
effects. Protein partitioning is better for PEG4000 at 0oC, pH 8.0
with 1 M NaCl with a yield 88.8%. The present study indicates that
PEG-PAA ATPS may be considered as an interesting alternative for protein
purification from the biological suspensions.
