observed as minute cuts or bruises on the fibre surface fibre rupture being an
extreme case of such damage.

Title: Effect of Medullation on Mechanical Properties of Wool Fibres
Authors: Rao, Drama; Chopra, S K
Abstract: <span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;

extent of medulla on stress-strain and torsional properties of single wool
fibres is reported<span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;

all the strains<span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;
font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:="" "times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:="" minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";color:#1e1e1e;mso-ansi-language:="" en-us;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">. <span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";="" mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" new="" roman";="" mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;="" mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";color:black;mso-ansi-language:en-us;="" mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">Swelling is less in
medullated fibres. Medulla has little effect on torsion at low strains; at high
shear strains the medulla collapses and the fibre fails at low twist<span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";="" mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" new="" roman";="" mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;="" mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";color:#1e1e1e;mso-ansi-language:en-us;="" mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">. <span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";="" mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" new="" roman";="" mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;="" mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";color:black;mso-ansi-language:en-us;="" mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">These differences in
mechanical properties are explained as due partly to the presence of medulla
and partly to the intrinsic changes in the keratin of these fibres.

Bulk Torsional Rigidity of Wool

Title: Bulk Torsional Rigidity of Wool
Authors: Rao, D Rama
Abstract: <span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;
font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:="" "times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:="" minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-ansi-language:en-us;="" mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">A simple torsion pendulum
method has been worked out for determining the torsional rigidity of wool
fibres in bulk form and for comparing the rigidities of various wools.
Medullation and variation in fineness distribution affect the rigidity, and
bundle test can resolve such differences also.
