Effect of Mercerization on the Spiral Angle of Different Varieties of Cotton

Title: Effect of Mercerization on the Spiral Angle of Different Varieties of Cotton
Authors: Iyer, K. R. Krishnlay; Patil, B.; Nachane, R. P.
Abstract: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;
font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:="" "times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:="" minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:arial;mso-ansi-language:en-us;mso-fareast-language:="" en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">X-ray angle (φ) and birefringence values (Δ
n) of eight carieties of cotton were measured before and after subjecting
them to swelling and stretching treatments in NaOH. Although the cottons
represent a wide range of φ and Δ n in the untreated state, the
differences narrow down considerably as a result of deconvolution accompanying
slack mercerization, suggesting that convolutions account for a large part of
the orientation differences found among raw cottons. However, the residual differences
in φ and Δ n among the slack swollen samples were significant and
were found to persist at all levels of stretch, indicative of distinct varietal
differences in the spiral angle.

ranks highest in white jute followed by Assam, West Bengal and Tripura, (ii)
Tripura and Assam produce tossa jute with the best fibre characters, Orissa and
West Bengal next, (iii) in mesta , West Bengal ranks highest among the states

identified for launching of quality improvement programmes.

tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride has been studied under different
conditions of pH and thermal curing using the infrared technique. The
data obtained have been analyzed and compared with those for the reactions
between cellobiose, THPC, thiourea and ammonium dihydrogen orthophosphate. The
data have been used for understanding the mechanism whereby THPC-based [formulations
impart flame-resistant characteristics to cellulose.

Title: THPC - Thiourea Flame-Retardant Finish for Cotton Textiles

chloride (THPC), thiourea and small amounts of ammonium dihydrogen orthophosphate
has been tried as an agent for imparting flame retardancy to cotton textiles.
The effect of laundering on the tensile strength tear strength char length crease
recovery, flex abrasion, air permeability and oxygen index of the treated sample
has been studied. The treated fabrics exhibit flame-retardant properties even after
30 launderings. The performance of the formulation les within the limits
specified in ASTM standards.
