Title: Taxonomic and antimicrobial profiles of a rare actinomycete isolated from an inland solar saltern (India)
Authors: Jose, Polpass Arul; Jebakumar, Solomon Robinson David
Abstract: <span style="font-size:9.0pt;font-family:
" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-bidi-font-family:="" "times="" roman";mso-ansi-language:en-gb;mso-fareast-language:en-us;="" mso-bidi-language:hi"="" lang="EN-GB">Rare actinomycetes from unexplored natural habitats
nourish current natural compound screening programs. A rare actinomycete strain
designated JAJ70; previously isolated from a hypersaline solar saltern was
selected for its antimicrobial activities against bacteria and fungi. In the
current study, the strain JAJ70 was studied at phenotypic and genotypic level
for its proper assignment under rare genus Actinoalloteichus. Comparison of the morphological and
physiological characteristics of JAJ70 with those of already known species of Actinoalloteichus
showed significant divergence. Analysis of the almost complete 16S rDNA
sequence of strain JAJ70 showed a similarity level ranging between 97 and 99.6%
within validly reported Actinoalloteichus species. Strain JAJ70 showed
significant antimicrobial activity against a range of fungal strains and
clinical pathogens including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In fact, the
broad-spectrum activity exhibited by JAJ70 implies the need of further
characterization of active antibiotic fraction from the crude extract and
subsequent identification of responsible gene clusters to uncover its
industrial and biotechnological significance.

Abstract: Microalgal recruitment, density and productivity
in term of chlorophyll a in
intertidal areas of rocky coast along Mumbai were estimated. Diatoms was
dominant contributing maximum chlorophyll a
in studied area. Thalassiosira spp., Nitzschia spp. and Navicula spp. were dominant microalgae. Microalgae was significantly positive
correlated with SST (p<0.01), DO (p<0.01), Chl a (p<0.05), diatoms (p<0.01) and dinoflagellates (p<0.01)
and significantly negative correlated with nitrate (p<0.05). Chl a was significantly positive correlated with SST (p<0.05), nitrate (p<0.01) and
diatoms (p<0.01) and significantly negative correlated with euglenozoa
(p<0.05), phosphate (p<0.05), salinity (p<0.05) and pH
(p<0.01). Phosphate and nitrate significantly
negative correlated (p<0.01). Shannon’s
index, Simpson’s index, Evenness and Equitability were recorded higher in
pre-monsoon season while dominance (D) was highest in post monsoon season.

Authors: Haniya, Abdul Majeeth Kamarul; Sweety, Francis Youthtith; Kothai, Seshathri; Mahalakshmi, Karuppiah
Abstract: <span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:
115%;font-family:" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:calibri;mso-bidi-font-family:="" "times="" roman";mso-ansi-language:en-us;mso-fareast-language:en-us;="" mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" lang="EN-US">In the present
study the methanolic extract of Chaetomorpha litorea (Harvey) was screened for antibacterial activity against the bacterial strains isolated from
fish. Antibacterial effect of C. litorea was studied by Minimal
Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) method. Result of MIC showed that the methanolic
extract of Chaetomorpha litorea
expressed its antibacterial activity against isolated fish bacterial strains at
lower concentration (50 to 1.562 µg/ml). In order to identify the active
principle rendering the antibacterial effect of Chaetomorpha litorea, the preliminary phytochemical screening, HPLC
and FT-IR analysis were done. HPLC spectrum showed 19 peaks (1 major and 18
minor), indicating the presence of nineteen components and the FT-IR spectrum
indicates the presence of compound with OH and C-H group.

Abstract: <span style="font-size:9.0pt;font-family:
" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-bidi-font-family:="" mangal;mso-ansi-language:en-gb;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:="" hi"="" lang="EN-GB">In the present work, the bioaccumulation of Cr (VI) by Artemia franciscana was investigated. Metallothionein protein plays
a key role in the uptake of Cr (VI) by Artemia
and it was estimated by the silver saturation method. Artemia (Brine Shrimp) was subjected to Cr (VI) initial
concentration of 40 ppm which was reduced to 2 ppm on 4th day of experimental
condition with removal efficiencies of 95%. The number of organisms were varied
to find out the maximum removal efficiency. Physical parameters such as pH were
maintained in alkaline condition of 9-10, temperature was maintained at room
temperature and 30-35 ppt of salinity condition was found to be optimum for the
survival and reduction of chromium by Artemia.
