<title>Shallow aquifers of east coast in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, India – An assessment using multivariate statistical analysis</title>

<description>Title: Shallow aquifers of east coast in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, India – An assessment using multivariate statistical analysis
Authors: Jayalakshmi, B.; Ramachandramoorthy, T.
Abstract: Thirty seven stations have been identified and the water samples were collected from May to June 2013, to know the groundwater quality of the East Coast of Ramanathapuram District using Water Quality Index (WQI) and Factor Analysis (FA). Samples were analyzed for the physico-chemical parameters viz., pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total dissolved solids, Total Hardness, Calcium Hardness, Magnesium Hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride and Salinity. The Water Quality Index decides the potability of groundwater in the present study area. Sea water intrusion has also been assessed using various parameters. For the statistical studies, values of mean, standard deviations and correlation coefficient were calculated to determine the relationship between the variables.

<title>Study on the status of corals in Palk Bay, Southeast coast of India during 2007-2013</title>

<description>Title: Study on the status of corals in Palk Bay, Southeast coast of India during 2007-2013
Authors: Edward, J.K. Patterson; Mathews, G.; Raj, K. Diraviya; Rajesh, S.
Abstract: Present study consists the status of corals in Palk Bay, conducted during 2007-2013. Corals are distributed in four sites (Mandapam north, Pamban, Thangachimadam and Olakuda) in Southern Palk Bay. The overall live coral cover was 30.78, 29.64 and 28.24% respectively during July 2007, September 2009 and April 2013. A sharp decrease in the live coral cover was observed in Mandapam north from 34.18 to 22.62% during the study period and an increase of algae from 14.88 to 31.52% was also recorded. The overall disease prevalence increased from 15.28% to 17.32% between 2009 and 2013. A complete stretch of Acropora cytherea in Mandapam north was dead because of the black band disease and the area is now dominated by macro algae. The other anthropogenic factors including destructive fishing practices, cultivation of exotic seaweed, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and elevated temperature pose threat to corals in Palk bay.

<title>Status of Dugong (Dugong dugon) in Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay, Tamil Nadu, India</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/34935</link>
<description>Title: Status of Dugong (Dugong dugon) in Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay, Tamil Nadu, India
Authors: Anand, Yashpal; Tatu, Ketan; Pandey, C. N.
Abstract: Present study consists the survey conducted in coastal villages from Dhanushkodi to Kannyakumari in the Gulf of Mannar (GoM) and from Dhanushkodi to Kodikkarai in the Palk Bay for understanding status of dugong. Survey provided sightings, distribution and population status of dugong in the GoM and the Palk Bay. Dugong was found to be distributed from Dhanushkodi (Ramnathpuram District) to Idinthakarai village (Tirunelveli District) in the GoM and from Dhanushkodi (Ramnathpuram District) to Adirampattinam (Thenjavur districts) in the Palk bay. Likely maximum population of dugong was estimated 78 and 80 individuals in GoM and Palk Bay respectively.

<title>Microanalysis by SEM-EDS on Elemental Composition of HgCl2 induced marine fish.</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/34934</link>
<description>Title: Microanalysis by SEM-EDS on Elemental Composition of HgCl2 induced marine fish.
Authors: Nagarani, N.; Anand, M.; Kumaraguru, A.K.
Abstract: In the present study the marine fish was exposed to mercuric chloride under controlled conditions and along with algal extract. In response to its toxicity and defense, the elemental distributions in gill, liver, kidney and brain were determined using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX). Spectroscopic analysis of tissues from two treatments demonstrated that higher levels of cations (K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn) occurred in HgCl2 fish .The possibility that these accumulation patterns arise from differences in uptake processes and structural properties is related to tolerance mechanisms. Resolving element distribution and speciation in fish is essential for understanding the mechanisms involved in mercury tolerance, trafficking and accumulation.
