Effect of wind and temperature on time evolution of laser beam scintillations in the surface layer: A case study

Title: Effect of wind and temperature on time evolution of laser beam scintillations in the surface layer: A case study
Authors: Raj, P Ernest; Devara, PCS; Sharma, S; Pandithurai, G
Abstract: The results of the case study conducted to examine the effect of wind and temperature on laser beam scintillations in the air layer close to the ground are presented here. The temporal evolution of scintillation spectra during a 24-hour period of observation showed an association with that of wind speed spectra, especially in the nighttime. Strong nocturnal inversion conditions, inferred from vertical temperature gradient, are also found to be closely related to the strength of laser scintillations.

Gunn integrated microstrip active antenna

Title: Gunn integrated microstrip active antenna
Authors: Sharma, Satish K; Vishvakarma, Babau R
Abstract: Investigations conducted on an active microstrip antenna (Gunn integrated with microstrip patch) in X-band show a marked improvement in the tuning range, beam width, gain and bandwidth. Theoretically predicted tuning range is 12% as compared to 9% of the reported data. The theoretical results are I good agreement with the reported experimental data.

Study of O(1 S) dayglow emission near equatorial latitudes

Title: Study of O(1 S) dayglow emission near equatorial latitudes
Authors: Singh, Vir; Tyagi, Satish
Abstract: Volume emission rate profiles of O(1 S) dayglow emission measured near equatorial latitudes on 30 Oct. 1992 and 20 Jan. 1993 by Wind Imaging Interferometer on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) are analyzed. These are the first results of volume emission rates between 90 and 300 km near equatorial latitudes. The observed emission rates are compared with the theoretical model developed for measurement conditions. It is found that the modelled and the measured profiles show discrepancy near mesospheric peak at latitudes close to the equator. This discrepancy supports the idea of tidal effects on O(1 S) emission near equator. In addition, the effects of solar zenith angle (SZA) on volume emission rate profiles are also studied. It is found that the modelled and the measured profiles show discrepancy near mesospheric peak at latitude close to the equator. In addition, the effects of solar zenith angle (SZA) on volume emission rate profiles are also studied. It is found that the thermospheric peak disappears when the SZA is greater than 80°.

Ionospheric effects of the total solar eclipse of 24 October 1995 over Ahmedabad

Title: Ionospheric effects of the total solar eclipse of 24 October 1995 over Ahmedabad
Authors: Chandra, H; Vyas, G D; Sharma, S
Abstract: Radio soundings were made rapidly (every minute) to study the ionospheric effects of the total solar eclipse of 24 Oct. 1995 over Ahmedabad with maximum obscuration of 83% at 0800 hrs (75° EMT). Comparison with the data recorded on the control day, 23 Oct. 1995, shows reduction of 57%, 69% and 40% in the maximum electron densities of E-, F1-, and F2- regions, respectively. True height analysis of quarter hourly ionograms shows maximum eclipse-associated decrease at 200 km. Some indication of wave activity is notices, especially, near the F2 peak soon after the eclipse.
