Title: Use of NOAA temperature-sounding data in long-range forecasting of south-west monsoon rainfall
Authors: Joshi, P C; Simon, B; Patra, S K
Abstract: The NOAA series of the meteorological polar orbiting satellites carry the temperature and the moisture sounders. In the study reported the vertical temperature profile obtained from the above sounder data for the month of April 1982 has been used to derive the geopotential height of the 500 mbar surface. From this the location of the subtropical ridge has been ascertained. Its comparison with that obtained from wind data has been made. The study suggests the possibility of using the ‘temperature profile’-derived ridge for the seasonal forecasting of the south-west monsoon rainfall.

Effect of humidity on the ratio of sized aerosols in Cairo atmosphere

Title: Effect of humidity on the ratio of sized aerosols in Cairo atmosphere
Authors: Rizk, Hoda F S
Abstract: Humidity in Cairo atmosphere varies in a wide range and its relative percentage affects the number concentration ratio of the particles which cause turbidity and the condensation nuclei in polluted atmosphere like that of Cairo. Estimation of number concentration of turbidity particles shows that its presence in high concentrations is affected by high relative humidity. Its mass concentrations calculated from turbidity measurements are compared with smoke concentrations measured in the area.

Classification of rain rate regions for propagation applications

Title: Classification of rain rate regions for propagation applications
Authors: Calla, O P N; Singh, R; Barathy, S; Radhakrishnan, M K
Abstract: Information on short duration precipitation rates is needed to predict the impact of rain on satellites communication system. Global rain rate models such as Crane and CCIR can be used for predicting 1-min rain rate for any place in the world. Both these models classify India into two regions which are not adequate to describe a vast region of varied climates. An attempt ha been made to provide an accurate description of rain rates for different regions in India, using hourly rainfall data obtained from 26 stations.

Inversion technique for ozone profiles using layer heterodyne radiometer

Title: Inversion technique for ozone profiles using layer heterodyne radiometer
Authors: Jain, S L
Abstract: An iterative inversion technique for retrieving vertical ozone profiles in the height range 20-40 km with 2 km height resolution is described; in the present retrieval technique, it is assumed that a laser heterodyne radiometer is flown on a balloon. Suitable contribution functions have been computed using Voigt profile above 30 km where Doppler broadening is dominant. Multi-channel approach is necessary to produce sharp vertical resolution. The present computations have been made in the 9.5 m wavelength region where a strong ozone absorption band exists. The ozone profiles obtained compare well with the measured data.
