Dynamics of the Monsoon Circulation

Title: Dynamics of the Monsoon Circulation
Authors: Keshavamurty, R N
Abstract: The most essential features of the dynamics of monsoon circulation are discussed. The mean monsoon circulation is maintained by the heating contrast of the Eurasian land mass with respect to the Indian and Pacific oceans. Monsoon disturbances form as a result of instability of the mean flow.

A Unified Theory of Equatorial Es

Title: A Unified Theory of Equatorial Es
Authors: Dagar, Rati; Setty, C S G K
Abstract: The unified theory of Es layer formation close to the geomagnetic equator includes the effects of both the electric field and the neutral wind. In the past the effects of the vertical shear of the horizontal wind alone have been considered. MacLeod [MacLeod M A, Space Res . 9 (1969). 363] has recently reported measurements of neutral winds using observations of time displacement of rocket-deposited chemical clouds. His observations suggest that the vertical shear of the vertical wind is comparable to the vertical shear of the horizontal wind. We have now examined its role in the formation of the equatorial Es layer. It is found that the shearing vertical wind has an effect which is almost an order of magnitude greater than that of the horizontal wind.

Electron Capture Processes In the Upper Atmosphere

Title: Electron Capture Processes In the Upper Atmosphere
Authors: Singh, N P; Singh, L S
Abstract: Cross-sections of electron capture into 1s and 2s states of hydrogen atom from hydrogen, helium and argon target gases have been calculated using Gryzinski model of electronic capture with modified limits of energy transfer in capture processes consistent with the detailed balance. The calculations have been made for the incident proton energy range 5-10,000 keV. The results are in fairly good agreement with experimental values.

Intensity Variation of OH Meinel Bands In the Nightglow at Poona

Title: Intensity Variation of OH Meinel Bands In the Nightglow at Poona
Authors: Agashe, V V; Gurao, J B
Abstract: Observations of OH (9,3) band nightglow emission carried out at poona (18·5°N, 73°-52' E) are analyzed. From OH (9,3) band intensities. The intensity of entire OH meinel band system (0·384µ-4·47µ) has been estimated. On the basis of the two-body ozone-hydrogen mechanism leading to the emission of OH bands in the nightglow, total OH estimated total OH band intensities are utilized to determine ozone concentration prevailing at nighttime over poona. It has been thus possible to study variation of ozone concentration during the night indirectly.
