<description>Title: Mangrove cholesterol in the diet of penaeid prawn Penaeus indicus
Authors: Ramesh, M X; Kathiresan, K
Abstract: Dietary potential of cholesterol extracted from Rhizophora leaves was studied with P. indicus under laboratory conditions. Mangrove cholesterol promoted growth, conversion efficiency and biochemical constituents of the prawn.

<title>Allometry in the wedge clam, Donax incarnatus (Gmelin) from Panambur beach, Mangalore</title>

<description>Title: Allometry in the wedge clam, Donax incarnatus (Gmelin) from Panambur beach, Mangalore
Authors: Thippeswamy, S; Joseph, M Mohan
Abstract: Allometry in the morphometric and shell length-body weight relationships of D. incarnatus was examined. The length-breadth and length-width relationships were L=0.3225+0.6754B and L=0.1634+0.3821W respectively. The proportionate increases in the shell dimensions resulted in retention of the wedge shape from spat stage onwards. On an yearly basis, the relationship between shell length-wet tissue weight was W=0.00005 L2.8321, whereas W=0.000027 L2.2976 for shell length-dry tissue weight. Monthly values of equilibrium constant (b) varied from 1.3103 (January) to 4.1243 (November) in the shell length-wet tissue weight relation, while the variation was from 1.5817 (May) to 3.3989 (November) in the shell length-dry tissue weight relation. Apart from indicating relative growth in body weight, the equilibrium constant also indicated variations in gonadal growth (weight) and condition index.

<title>Phytoplankton characteristics and species assemblage patterns in northwest Bay of Bengal</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/38042</link>
<description>Title: Phytoplankton characteristics and species assemblage patterns in northwest Bay of Bengal
Authors: Prakash, K Phani; Raman, A V
Abstract: Qualitative and quantitative composition of phytoplankton of surface waters showed 109 species, represented by blue-green algae, diatoms and dinoflagellates. Among these, Trichodesmium thiebautii (29.34%), T. erythraeum (27.97%), Nitzschia seriata (10.06%), Rhizosolenia cylindrus (4.64%), Thallassiothrix longissima (2.05%), Dinophysis sp. (0.78%), Noctiluca scintillans (0.75%) and Ceratium sp. (0.6%) constituted the most important species. Miscellaneous species made up 23.8% to the total population. In general, there was a decrease in the overall abundance of phytoplankton offshore and increase in species diversity. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) it was possible to identify 5 assemblages of phytoplankton as determined by the prevailing hydrographical conditions.

<title>Assessment of eutrophication in the marine environment of Visakhapatnam using nutrient index as a tool</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/38041</link>
<description>Title: Assessment of eutrophication in the marine environment of Visakhapatnam using nutrient index as a tool
Authors: Satyanarayana, D; Sahu, S D; Panigrahy, P K
Abstract: The extent of eutrophication in harbour and coastal environment of Visakhapatnam has been quantitatively evaluated using nutrient index (I). The index values obtained for PO4 - P, NO3 - N and NH4 - N in harbour waters (I &gt; 5) conclusively. proved the existence of eutrophication in Visakhapatnam harbour. Further, the nutrient index showed a decreasing trend from harbour to coastal region (I = 3-5) indicating mesotrophic conditions in the coastal environment. This is attributed to the discharge of domestic sewage and industrial effluents containing organic matter into the harbour and their subsequent dispersion into the coastal region.
