Title: Total mercury content of Indian squid Loligo duvauceli Orbigny from Tuticorin waters, south east coast of India
Authors: Jasmine, G Indra; Rajagopalsamy, C B T; Jeyachandran, P
Abstract: Mercury content in L. duvauceli varied from 0.008 to 0.123 ppm wet weight (0.038 ppm to 0.202 ppm dry weight) with a mean value of 0.018 ± 0.002 ppm wet ppm wet weight (0.076 ± 0.008 ppm dry weight). These levels are well below the FAO/WHO recommended upper limit of 0.5 ppm.

Digestive enzymes of marine bivalves, Donax cuneatus and Perna viridis

Title: Digestive enzymes of marine bivalves, Donax cuneatus and Perna viridis
Authors: Selvarani, C; Bharathi, M S; Ramalingam, K
Abstract: Amylase and protease activities were studied in the gut of D. cuneatus (as intertidal sandy-shore deposit feeder) and P. viridis (an intertidal rocky-shore suspension feeder). Crystalline style of both bivalves showed strong amylase activity compared to that of the digestive diverticula, indicating that the style is the main source of extracellular carbohydrate digestion in these bivalves. The digestive diverticula of both the species exhibited strong proteolytic activity. The intracellular proteolytic activity of the digestive diverticula was higher than the extracellular protein digestion exhibited by the gastric juice. The different levels of amylase and protease activity observed in these bivalves may be related to the habitats and also to the diet.

Primary production of seagrass Cymodocea serrulata and its contribution to productivity of Amini atoll, Lakshadweep Islands

Title: Primary production of seagrass Cymodocea serrulata and its contribution to productivity of Amini atoll, Lakshadweep Islands
Authors: Kaladharan, P; Raj, I David
Abstract: Primary productivity of two adjacent atolls of Lakshadweep islands differing in the presence of Cymodocea serrulata (R.Br.) Aschers beds as measured from the diurnal oxygen curve was compared. Amini atoll which sustains extensive beds of seagrass vegetation showed 65 per cent more productivity than the nearest atoll Kadamat which is totally lacking seagrass vegetation. The net primary production of C. serrulata was measured to be 6.4 g C.m-3.d-1 and this was 6 times more than that of the phytoplankton alone. High rate of production of oxygen by Cymodocea beds during intensive photosynthesis is discussed in the light of oxygen budget of the atoll.

Title: Application of fertilizer pellets in the field cultivation of red alga Gelidiella acerosa (Rhodophyta)
Authors: Mairh, O P; Thomas, P C; Ramavat, B K; Rao, P S
Abstract: Three kinds of fertilizer pellets containing ammonium sulphate and superphosphate (A), calcium ammonium nitrate and superphosphate (B) and calcium ammonium nitrate only (C) were tried as a source of N and P, to enhance growth of G. acerosa in the field cultivation experiments. The pellets `A' gave significantly higher bushiness and dry weight over control, and a maximum yield of 13.29 g (dry). m -1 length of the rope.
