<title>Variability of Mixed Layer Depth in the Northern Indian Ocean during 1977 and 1979 Summer Monsoon Seasons</title>

<description>Title: Variability of Mixed Layer Depth in the Northern Indian Ocean during 1977 and 1979 Summer Monsoon Seasons
Authors: Krishna, V V Gopala; Sadhuram, Y; Babu, V Ramesh
Abstract: Influences of wind stress (tau) and wind stress curl (Grad Gamma) on the short term variability of the mixed layer depth at different locations in the northern Indian Ocean during different phases of summer monsoon activity were examined quantitatively making use of time-series data collected during MONSOON-77 and MONEX-79 programmes. After the onset of monsoon (June/July 1977) over the central Arabian Sea, wind stress together with possible sinking processes on account of negative wind stress curl and convective turnover seemed to play an important role in the development of mixed layer while in the southern Arabian Sea region, the mixed layer mainly responded to the wind stress forcing, whose magnitude though was one order less during May/June 1979. In the northern Bay of Bengal the correlation between wind stress and mixed layer was weak indicating influence of stratification caused by the fresh water discharges from Hooghly and Brahmaputra rivers.

<title>Ferro-Manganese Oxide Growth on Shark Teeth from Central Indian Ocean Basin</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/38570</link>
<description>Title: Ferro-Manganese Oxide Growth on Shark Teeth from Central Indian Ocean Basin
Authors: Banakar, V K; Sudhakar, M
Abstract: Study of ferro-manganese oxide growth on apatitic substrates like shark teeth enamel from siliceous sediment environment (lat. 10 degrees S and long. 75 degrees E) suggests the changes in depositional environments within the sediment layer through the growth history of these oxides. Though the nature of substrates does not have any control over the mineralogy and chemistry of Fe-Mn oxides, an active sink like loose sediment or altered basaltic coat appears to be the primary requirement before ferric hydroxide coat on hard nucleating agent.

<title>Mechanics of Formation of a Nearshore Sand Bar in Ebb-Tidal-Spit: A theoretical Study</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/38569</link>
<description>Title: Mechanics of Formation of a Nearshore Sand Bar in Ebb-Tidal-Spit: A theoretical Study
Authors: Das, S; Sengupta, S
Abstract: Numerical model for the tides in the neighbourhood of a growing ebb-spit is described, theoretically, using polar co-ordinates. This model avoids the numerical difficulties associated with corners and allows the use of an idealised submarine topography in interpreting the dynamics of formation of a bar. The model derives the well known tidal characteristics for the ebb-spit and gives confidence in applying this technique to further theoretical studies, no longer tied to particular real situations. It is shown that ebb-spits are characterized by strong tidal flows and it is possible that vorticity generated near the ebb-spit plays a key role in the dynamics of nearshore ( 5 m water depth or within zone of surf activity) sand bar.
