Title: Effect on growth regulators in the field cultivation of G. edulis (Gmelin) silva
Authors: Paramasivam, M; Devadoss, G G M
Abstract: Fragments of G. edulis were treated for 12 h with indole acetic acid, gibberellic acid, kinetin, 2, 4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (sodium salt) and maleic hydrazide at concentrations 5 and 10 mg l-1. The treated fragments were propagated vegetatively in the sea at Krusadai Island (Tamil Nadu, India). Among these growth regulators kinetin produced maximum increase of length (32.8%) over control in G. Edulis.

Distribution of tocopherol (vitamin E) in marine algae from Goa, West Coast of India

Title: Distribution of tocopherol (vitamin E) in marine algae from Goa, West Coast of India
Authors: Jayasree, V; Solimabi; Kamat, S Y
Abstract: Tocopherol content has been estimated in 17 marine algal species belonging to Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae and Rhodophyceae following the dipyridyl – FeCl3 method after alkaline saponification. The content estimated for the first time in most of the algae varies from 0.66 to 7.65, 0.35 to 24.5 and 0.8 to 8.9 mg.kg-1 (wet wt) respectively in green, brown and red algae.

Semi-annual breeding pattern in the burrowing sand crab Albunea symmysta (L.) (= symnista) of Madras Coast

Title: Semi-annual breeding pattern in the burrowing sand crab Albunea symmysta (L.) (= symnista) of Madras Coast
Authors: Subramoniam, T; Panneerselvam, M
Abstract: Albunea symmysta breeds continuously in the Madras Coast, Tamil Nadu, India. Two distinct reproductive peaks, one in January and another in July reveal a semi-annual breeding pattern. During October to December, the ovarian activity is very minimal and in many females the ovary is in a degenerating condition. Frequency of ovigerous females is as low as 25%, even during the peak reproductive season. Frequent oosorption probably due to failure of mating among the vitellogenic females is suggested to be the causative factor for the poor reproductive success in this sand crab.

Title: Toxicity of insecticide phosphamidon on tissue carbohydrate catabolism of penaeid prawn Penaeus indicus (H. Milne Edwards)
Authors: Reddy, M Srinivasulu; Murthy, B Narasimha; Venkateswarlu, Y; Rao, K V Ramana
Abstract: Phosphamidon toxicity induced carbohydrate breakdown in the tissues indicated that the prawn is under toxic stress. Carbohydrate, glycogen, lactate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase levels decreased in phosphamidon exposed prawns.
