Biochemical composition of some marine brown algae from Jeddah Coast, Saudi Arabia

Title: Biochemical composition of some marine brown algae from Jeddah Coast, Saudi Arabia
Authors: Behairy, A K A; El-Sayed, M M
Abstract: Protein, lipid, alginic acid, crude fiber, chlorophylls a and c, moisture and the ash contents were estimated in Sargassum rulgare, S. enerve, Cystoseira barbata, Turbinaria murrayana and Padina vickersiae. The results suggest their potential use as animal feed and fertilizers.

Elemental composition of certain green seaweeds of Porbandar Reef

Title: Elemental composition of certain green seaweeds of Porbandar Reef
Authors: Rao, Ch Kesava; Chauhan, V D; Indusekhar, V K
Abstract: Variations of ash, C, N, P, Na, K, Ca and Mg contents were studied in Caulerpa scalpelliformis, Ulva lactuca and Codium dwarkense during December 1981 to February 1982, the period in which these algae complete their life cycle. Maximum ash, Na, K and Ca were observed during early growth, followed by N during middle and C and P during late growth periods. All the species proportionally accumulated more K and Ca, though the concentrations of Na and Mg in seawater were several folds more than K and Ca.

Effect of dispersants on the growth of indigenous bacterial population and biodegradation of crude oil

Title: Effect of dispersants on the growth of indigenous bacterial population and biodegradation of crude oil
Authors: Bhosle, N B; Row, A
Abstract: Oil dispersants (5 from Castrol Ltd., Bombay and 2 from British Petroleum, London) were studied individually and in combination with Saudi Arabian crude oil for their effect on the growth of indigenous bacteria and on the biodegradation of oil. None of the dispersants were toxic, except IB 2/80, to the bacterial population. All of the dispersants, when used alone, or in combination with the crude oil, supported good growth of bacteria. The Saudi Arabian crude oil by itself was toxic to the bacteria, and when mixed with the dispersants reduced their rates of biodegradation. Maximum degradation (46.4%) was observed with the mixture of crude oil and dispersant IB 1/80.

Authors: Babu, K Surendra; Rao, K Siva Prasada; Babu, K Srinivasa; Rao, K V Ramana; Babu, K Sasira
Abstract: P. indicus and M. monoceros exhibited differential response towards phenthoate toxicity when exposed to different concentrations under 24 and 48 h exposure.
