Chemical composition of leaves of halophytes and sediments in estuarine habitat

Title: Chemical composition of leaves of halophytes and sediments in estuarine habitat
Authors: Waghmode, A P; Joshi, G V
Abstract: Leaves of Aeluropus lagopoides (L.), Ceriops tagal (Perr.) and Lumnitzera racemosa (Willd) along with soil and water surrounding rootzone are studied for their mineral constituents. Leaves of Lumnitzera are rich in Na and Cl content than Aeluropus and Ceriops. Aeluropus shows efficient K uptake and shows maximum Fe, Mn, P and N2 content than Ceriops and Lumnitzera. The estuarine soil where the plants are located is sandy in nature with pH 7, while surrounding water is slightly alkaline. Analysis of leaves for organic constituents shows that these halophytes have almost same moisture percentage and carbohydrate content. Ceriops is rich in polyphenol content. Maximum proline is present in leaves of Lumnitzera while Aeluropus leaves show maximum chlorophylls indicating that different halophytes located in same habitat show difference in organic and inorganic constituents.

Fatty acid composition of neutral lipids from some red algae

Title: Fatty acid composition of neutral lipids from some red algae
Authors: Marolia, Vispi J; Joshi, Sushil; Mathur, H H
Abstract: Acanthophora specifera, Gracilaria corticata and Hypnea musciformis, collected from the intertidal regions, were analysed for their lipid content and fatty acid composition by GLC. The mixed fatty acids were rich in saturated acids, palmitic acid being the major component. Among the unsaturated acids, oleic acid was predominant. Polyunsaturated as well as lower fatty acids were absent.

Size related metabolism of Perna viridis (Linnaeus) from Waltair Coast

Title: Size related metabolism of Perna viridis (Linnaeus) from Waltair Coast
Authors: Rao, Y Prabhakara; Veeresalingam, M; Rao, D G V Prasada
Abstract: Oxygen consumption and metabolic rate of P. viridis in relation to its body size was studied at a constant temperature of 25ᵒC. Oxygen consumption showed an exponential relationship with size. A positive linear correlation was obtained with a b value of 0.7356 for the oxygen consumption and a negative linear correlation with a (b-1) value of -0.2644 was observed for the weight specific oxygen consumption or metabolic rate. The b value of P. viridis was compared with that of other bivalves.

Rhythmic oxygen consumption in relation to eyestalk removal in Uca marionis

Title: Rhythmic oxygen consumption in relation to eyestalk removal in Uca marionis
Authors: Rao, D G V Prasada; Rao, G V Krishna
Abstract: Uca marionis displayed a 24 hr diurnal rhythmic cycle in the rate of oxygen consumption, and eyestalk removal disturbed this cycle. It is suggested that a factor present in the eyestalks may regulate the diurnal rhythmic oxygen consumption of U. marionis.
