Hydrographic Features of Nearshore Waters along Mangalore Coast

Title: Hydrographic Features of Nearshore Waters along Mangalore Coast
Authors: Suresh, K.; Reddy, M. P. M.; Kurian, N. P.
Abstract: Monthly and seasonal variations of some hydrographic features at 9 stations in the sea off Mangalore along the South Kanara coast were studied. Air and sea water temperatures showed a double oscillation during the year. Lowering of sea water temperature in May before the break of south west monsoon was perhaps due to upwelling at this time. Surface salinity showed a triple oscillation for all stations. Salinity of surface water fluctuated more sharply than bottom water salinity. In general, dissolved oxygen values showed an inverse correlation with values of salinity and temperature. Relatively low oxygen during May at the surface appeared to be due to upwelling. Transparency of water was high during summer months and low during south west monsoon season. The waters very near to the shore were more turbid than the waters farther away. Generally, surface currents were directed towards north during March and towards south during August.

Distribution of Phosphate in Sediments of the Northern Half of the Western Continental Shelf of India

Title: Distribution of Phosphate in Sediments of the Northern Half of the Western Continental Shelf of India
Authors: Rao, Ch. M.; Rajamanickam, G. V.; Paropkari, A. L.; Murty, P. S. N.
Abstract: The study has revealed that (i) P2O5 content in the sediments varies from 0.17 to 1.2%, (ii) fine grained sediments of terrigenous origin occupying inner shelf region between Gulf of Cambay and Port Dabhol and greater part of the shelf region north of Gulf of Cambay up to Indus Canyon contain low percentages of phosphate ( 0.2 to 0.3%), typical for normal marine sediments, while the relict zone of the outer shelf region between Gulf of Cambay and a little south of Bombay and the upper Continental slope region contain relatively high content of P2O5 and (iii) P2O5 content of the acid soluble fractions of the sediments also exhibits a similar trend. These distribution patterns are discussed in relation to the distribution patterns of the sediments and their chemistry and the hydrographic features of the overlying waters. From these studies, it is suggested that the outer shelf region between Gulf of Cambay and a little south of Bombay and the Continental slope region are environmentally favourable for detailed exploration of phosphate.

Distribution of CaCO3, Ca2+ & Mg2+ in Sediments of the Northern Half of Western Continental Shelf of India

Title: Distribution of CaCO3, Ca2+ & Mg2+ in Sediments of the Northern Half of Western Continental Shelf of India
Authors: Rao, Ch. Madhusudana
Abstract: Surface sediment samples (90) collected from the continental shelf from the Indus river in the north to Ratnagiri in the south were analysed. The outer shelf sandy calcareous relict sediments were high in CaCO3 (50 to 94%) than the innershelf silty clays or clayey silts (5 to 25%). Ca2+ was relatively high in the outer shelf sediments while Mg2+ was conspicuously low, especially in the area Gulf of Cambay to Ratnagiri. Mg2+ was relatively high in the sediments of the middle shelf between Ratnagiri and Gulf of Cambay, and middle and outer shelf off Kathiawar and was low in the nearshore terrigenous clays and in the outer shelf of the region north of the Gulf of Kutch which was largely supplied by the river Indus. Ca2+/Mg2+ ratio was high in the outer shelf sediments, where oolites were predominant, lower in the middle shelf, where the skeletal components were dominant in the sediment, and very low in terrigenous clays, which is because of higher magnesium content in the skeletal components than in the oolites. Distribution of CaCO3 and Ca2+/Mg2+ ratio of the sediments of the shelf region reflected the different palaeoenvironmental conditions under which the recent inner shelf and the outer shelf relict sediments were deposited.

Distribution of Some Biochemical Compounds in Sediments of the Shelf and Slope Regions of the West Coast of India

Title: Distribution of Some Biochemical Compounds in Sediments of the Shelf and Slope Regions of the West Coast of India
Authors: Bhosle, N. B.; Dhargalkar, V. K.; Braganca, Analia M.
Abstract: Thirty-four sediment samples, collected from the Arabian Sea, were analysed for their composition of organic matter. The study revealed high concentrations from the continental slope, whereas continental shelf samples were characterized by low contents of organic carbon, total nitrogen and carbohydrates. Direct relationship was observed between organic carbon-nitrogen and organic carbon-carbohydrate.
