Abstract: Ordinarily, the word 'document' denotes a textual record that&#xD;
holds information. The term 'document' represents a discrete&#xD;
physical object in human perception. The role of document in&#xD;
the context of information retrieval has been discussed. The&#xD;
nature, form and scope of documents are also continuously&#xD;
changing. The feasibility and scope of considering natural&#xD;
objects as primary documents have been discussed. Various&#xD;
concepts of documents are presented from different&#xD;
viewpoints.

Abstract: The paper suggests a methodology for studying the&#xD;
quantitative profile of a.research and teaching institute,&#xD;
with a view to get idea about its major research&#xD;
contributions, performance and impact in different fields&#xD;
of S&amp; T: A number of quantitative and qualitative indicators&#xD;
have been used for studying the relative performance of&#xD;
the institute across various subject fields. Concludes that&#xD;
the three subjects, namely mathematics, biology and&#xD;
clinical medicine, although contributing smaller number&#xD;
of papers, secured first three ranks in terms of average&#xD;
normalized impact factor perpaper. They have also done&#xD;
fairly well in terms of percentage of collaborative papers,&#xD;
but faired badly in terms of contributing to high quality&#xD;
papers, with the exception of clinical medicine. These&#xD;
three fields have performed the best in terms of&#xD;
publication effectiveness index.
