Abstract: Length frequency data series of oil sardine Sardinella longiceps Val. from northern Arabian Sea along the west coast of India off Ratnagiri were used to model the growth, mortality rates and yield per recruit. Mean population parameters were; L∞ = 233 mm (total length), K = 0.92 year-1, to = -0.0023 year, Z = 5.23 year-1, M = 1.45 year-1, F = 3.78 year-1and E = 0.72. Using VBGF, the length attained at the end of 1, 2 and 3 years of life was estimated at 140, 196 and 218 mm, respectively. The phi-prime (ɸ) value or the growth performance index was obtained as 2.70. Yield per recruit analysis showed that excessive fishing effort was being exerted on the stocks and a substantial reduction in fishing effort will be required for sustainability of the fishery.

Identification of fishing grounds for emerging non-conventional crustacean fishery resources off south-west coast of India

Title: Identification of fishing grounds for emerging non-conventional crustacean fishery resources off south-west coast of India
Authors: Kumar, K. Yogesh; Dineshbabu, A. P.; Thomas, Sujitha; Salian, Shailaja
Abstract: Trawling operations, extended wide and far, have resulted in the emergence of many non-conventional fishery resources. Apart from regular commercial crustacean resources of shrimps, crabs and lobsters, crucifix crab, C. feriatus, C. smithii and C lucifera are forming bulk catch in regular trawl fishery recently. The south-west coast of India contributes one-third of country’s stomatopod production in which Oratosquilla nepa contributes the maximum. Extension of fishing grounds has resulted in exploitation of larger-sized stomatopods Harpiosquilla harpax, which is edible. Present study aims at understanding the spatio-temporal distribution of these non-conventional resources, through GIS-based resource mapping which is indicative of their distribution and abundance. The study showed that there is good potential for commercial exploitation of non-conventional resources which can form a part of the commercial fishery in coming years to enrich the seafood availability and to provide new avenues for fishermen for maximising their returns from the fishery.

Breeding seasonality of Anodontostoma chacunda (Hamilton, 1822) off Mangalore coast, Karnataka, India

Title: Breeding seasonality of Anodontostoma chacunda (Hamilton, 1822) off Mangalore coast, Karnataka, India
Authors: Ramya, V.C.; Benakappa, S.; Mahesh, V.; Naik, A.S. Kumar; Anjanayappa, H.N.; Vijaykumar, M.E.
Abstract: Clupeids support world’s largest marine fishery and dominant pelagic group landing from Indian waters. Even though landings of marine sector increased, the quantity of fish landing is dwindled and fluctuating and capture fish production is dependent on one of the natural biological factors “reproduction”. To increase the production potential of marine fisheries, studies on breeding seasonality with reproductive biology of fish is an essential precursor for eco-friendly rational exploitation and sustainable management of fisheries. The present study focuses on some of the important reproductive biology aspects of Anodontostoma chacunda along the Mangalore coast for the first time. Six maturity stages were classified based on macroscopic appearance. Gonado-Somatic Index (GSI) indicated protracted spawning which extended from September (2013) to April (2014) with evidence of ova diameter studies as a prolonged spawner. The size at first maturity of A. chacunda was estimated at 139 mm (TL) and 141 mm (TL) for male and female, respectively. The overall male-female sex ratio of 1:1.04 was skewed towards female in A. chacunda and differed among months and size classes. Fecundity of A. chacunda ranged between 2,97,457 to 11,44,871 eggs.

Authors: Bhakta, Dibakar; Meetei, Wakamban Anand; Vaisakh, G.; Kamble, Suhas P.; Solanki, Jayesh K.; Das, Sanjoy Kumar
Abstract: Length-weight relationship and relative condition factor of T. ilisha was conducted for one year (2014-15) at Narmada estuary, Gujarat, India. Fish samples were collected from Bharuch, Bhadbhut, Mehgam and Ambetha landing sites covering 72 km of estuarine stretch. Two distinct fishing seasons were observed at Narmada estuary, viz., June-October and January-March, though the bulk of the harvest comes from monsoon season. A total of 312 fish samples were collected, 270 during monsoon and 42 during the winter season. The mean length and weight were recorded 35.37±11.36 cm and 625.83±39.81 g during monsoon and 36.84±3.82 cm and 537.44 ± 17.45 g during the winter season. The ‘b’ value was found to be 3.07 and 2.76 and relative condition factor was 1.02 and 1.01 during monsoon and winter seasons, respectively.
