Title: Versatility of magnetic Fe3O4 supported copper nanocomposite catalyst towards reduction of carbonyl and nitro compound
Authors: Gogoi, Nibedita; Gogoi, Chimi Rekha; Gogoi, Pradip K; Borah, Geetika
Abstract: Ferrite supported copper nanocomposite catalyst has been synthesized and characterized by TEM, SEM-EDS mapping, XRD, XPS and ICP-AES analysis. This nanocomposite is found to be more efficient and versatile towards carbonyl and nitro reduction under mild reaction condition with very good yield and turn over number. The catalyst is magnetically recoverable and also reusable for a minimum of four catalytic cycles.

Synthesis and characterization of a new water-soluble non-cytotoxic mito-tracker capped silicon quantum dot

Title: Synthesis and characterization of a new water-soluble non-cytotoxic mito-tracker capped silicon quantum dot
Authors: Saha, Subrata Kumar; Saha, Swadhin Kumar; Dhara, Koushik; Chattopadhyay, Pabitra; Sarkar, Arnab
Abstract: Allyl triphenylphosphonium bromide based mito-tracker capped silicon quantum dot (Mito-SiQDs) has been synthesized through an inverse micelle process. It was then fully characterized by transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic method. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses of the quantum dots confirm the presence of carbon, silicon, phosphorous and bromine atoms in Mito-SiQDs. Morphological study by transmission electron microscopy experiment showed the formation of the particles of size 11-12 nm of quantum dot dimension. The high negative zeta potential value of –23.7 mV calculated from dynamic light scattering study indicates the high stability of the circumvent agglomeration of Mito-SiQDs. The mito-tracker capped silicon quantum dot has blue emission at 400 nm wavelength upon excitation at 327 nm. Mito-SiQDs has not shown any significant cytotoxic effect with 10 to 50 μL/mL concentration on HeLa cell line for at least up to 12 h of its treatment. The Mito-SiQDs would be useful a possible fluorescent marker to visualize mitochondrial subcellular compartment in living cell through fluorescence imaging study.

Synthesis, characterization and biological studies on Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes derived from 4-(2-amino ethyl) benzene-1,2-diol and 1,4 benzoquinone

Title: Synthesis, characterization and biological studies on Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes derived from 4-(2-amino ethyl) benzene-1,2-diol and 1,4 benzoquinone
Authors: Gomathi, Thulasimani; Karthik, Somasundaram; Vedanayaki, Subramaniam
Abstract: A novel Schiff base ligand (L) has been synthesized using 4-(2-amino ethyl) benzene-1,2-diol (Dopamine) and 1,4 benzoquinone. Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with this hexadentate ligand have been synthesized with metal:ligand (1:1) stoichiometry. The Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, infrared and electronic spectra, ESR, NMR, Mass spectra, powder X-ray diffraction and SEM studies. Molar conductance showed that all complexes are non-electrolytic in nature. The Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) complexes are found to be octahedral and distorted octahedral structure for Cu(II) complex. Powder X-ray diffraction reveals that Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes are nano-crystalline in nature but Co(II) complex is amorphous. Different morphologies of synthesized compounds are identified by SEM images. Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes were screened against gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria and one fungus strain. The data show that the ligand and its metal complexes have significant activity. Copper(II) complex shows better activity than other complexes. The Schiff base ligand and its copper(II) complex are evaluated for the anti-inflammatory by HRBC membrane stabilization method. The anti-cancer activity of Schiff base ligand and its copper complex was also studied against human breast cancer cell line by MTT assay method. The anti-diabetic activity of Schiff base ligand and its copper(II) complex is also studied by alpha-amylase method.

CT-DNA-binding and biological activity of mononuclear copper(II) complexes with imidazo-phenanthroline ligands

Title: CT-DNA-binding and biological activity of mononuclear copper(II) complexes with imidazo-phenanthroline ligands
Authors: Nagababu, Penumaka; Thulasiram, B; Nagarkar, Jidnyasa; Devi, C Shobha; Paul, Perala Sudheer; Reddy, Thatiparthi Byragi
Abstract: Four imidazo-phenanthroline (IP) based ligands and its corresponding copper polypyridyl complexes have been prepared [Cu(L1-L4)2]2+ and characterized by various physicochemical techniques. Herein we are reporting the CT-DNA (calf-thymus DNA) binding & anti-cancer affinity of ligands (L1-L4) as well as complexes (C1-C4). The DNA binding affinity of synthesized C1-C4 has been carried out by using spectroscopic techniques like UV/visible, emission, molecular modeling and viscosity techniques. The obtained results are clearly indicating that all C1-C4 complexes bind to DNA via intercalative mode and they possess a significant cytotoxic effect toward selected cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231, B16-F10, DU-145 and CHO-K1).
