      <title>Scientific Temper among Secondary School Students</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/58928</link>
      <description>Title: Scientific Temper among Secondary School Students
Authors: BISWAL, PROF. ASHUTOSH; PANDEY, ADITI
Abstract: The skill of analysing and evaluating information is very important in&#xD;
the 21st century knowledge economy. Scientific temper is such a bent of&#xD;
mind which helps one in this skill by thinking rationally and logically.&#xD;
Scientific temper is considered as one of the fundamental duties which&#xD;
is also identified as the most important 21st century skill in the National&#xD;
Education Policy, 2020. Hence, it is expected that the present youth&#xD;
comprising school and college should have scientific temper as per the&#xD;
need of the time. It is also important to know the level of scientific&#xD;
temper among our school and college going students so that required&#xD;
measures can be taken up to develop this skill.&#xD;
The present study is an attempt to find out the scientific temper&#xD;
among secondary school students. Descriptive survey method was&#xD;
adopted for this purpose. 272 IX standard students were taken as the&#xD;
sample from the schools of Vadodara District using convenient&#xD;
sampling method. A scale was prepared, validated and used by the&#xD;
researchers to measure the scientific temper. Mean, SD and Mann&#xD;
Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis of data. The findings&#xD;
of the study revealed an above average level of scientific temper&#xD;
among secondary school students as a whole and in all the eight&#xD;
components of scientific temper with high deviation. No significant&#xD;
differences were observed between the mean scores of secondary&#xD;
school boys and girls in scientific temper as a whole and in all the&#xD;
eight components.

Authors: UMMER, REHANA; RAJGOLI, IQBALAHMAD U
Abstract: The reporting of research and development is very important for any&#xD;
organisation as it is not only simple reporting to keep the general public&#xD;
updated on the developments but as it also involves critical evaluation of&#xD;
different programmes and activities. The present study is the quantitative&#xD;
analysis of 2382 unique news items, related to 59 ISRO missions&#xD;
launched during the period 2011-2020, retrieved from the Bangalore&#xD;
edition of four popular English print newspapers namely Deccan Herald,&#xD;
The Hindu, The New Indian Express, and The Times of India.&#xD;
The collected data was further categorised into different missions&#xD;
based on their applications for analysis. By applying one full credit&#xD;
for each mission covered in the news items, a total of 3729 news&#xD;
items were found. Of all the ISRO missions launched during the&#xD;
period of study, GSLV-MkIII-M1/Chandrayaan-2 had the highest&#xD;
news coverage with 742 (19.89 per cent) news items followed by&#xD;
PSLV-C25/Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) with 601 (16.12 per&#xD;
cent) news items. The study further observed that there is no&#xD;
uniformity in reporting and coverage among the selected newspapers.

Abstract: The livelihood strategies of the tribal communities are diverse from other&#xD;
communities as the ecological surrounding area, population size,&#xD;
language, physical features and level of development vary in the&#xD;
scheduled tribe’s categories. A tribal population in Uttarakhand resides in&#xD;
long Tarai and far-flung remote hilly regions, where livelihood and&#xD;
development are a matter of hardship. In fact, the basic health facilities,&#xD;
sensitization about quality drinking water and many more are in&#xD;
adequate. The tribe’s areas are most neglected and highly vulnerable to&#xD;
diseases with a high degree of malnutrition, morbidity and mortality.&#xD;
Their misery is compounded by poverty, illiteracy, ignorance of the&#xD;
causes of diseases, hostile environment, poor sanitation, lack of safe&#xD;
drinking water and blind beliefs, etc. Water from the different sources is&#xD;
being polluted by different means such as domestic waste, weathering of&#xD;
rocks, anthropogenic activities and sewage effluents, etc., which affect&#xD;
the physicochemical and biological properties of water, which ultimately&#xD;
create havoc among the tribes by many water-borne diseases.

      <title>Can Images with Isolated Looped Motion or “Cinemagraphs” Improve Science Communication Design?</title>
      <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/58925</link>
      <description>Title: Can Images with Isolated Looped Motion or “Cinemagraphs” Improve Science Communication Design?
Authors: KHAN, FARHAT BASIR
Abstract: Science communication is not a new concept; scientists have been trying&#xD;
to communicate their scientific findings and theories to the general&#xD;
population for centuries. The communication meant for non-scientists is&#xD;
particularly complex, considering their limited understanding of the&#xD;
subject and weak grasp of certain concepts. Visual communication design&#xD;
has been used in the form of infographics, photographs and illustrations&#xD;
for the popularisation of science.&#xD;
The use of cinemagraphs or images with isolated looped motion&#xD;
could present an interesting option to communicators to convey&#xD;
focused visual messages. A survey was conducted to see if a group&#xD;
of students (n=120) and teachers (n=28) of a science &amp; technology&#xD;
university saw any value in the use of cinemagraphs. The&#xD;
cinemagraph was deemed to be 42% more informative than the still&#xD;
image by the students and 29% more informative by the teachers.&#xD;
The participants also found the cinemagraphs to be more useful&#xD;
and attractive than the other formats. Different kinds of motions were&#xD;
defined in the cinemagraphs. participants preferred “small slow&#xD;
subtle motion”, “large intermittent motion” and “dispersed localized&#xD;
motion” over the still images and the videos by a wider margin.&#xD;
While making cinemagraphs, picking the right subject to highlight&#xD;
and using the right kind of motion can be used to improve focus and&#xD;
convey messages in a more attractive and useful manner and this&#xD;
could be crucial in improving science communication, especially for&#xD;
the non-scientists.
