Abstract: Conventional revascularization strategies for ischemic heart disease (IHD) are designed to prompt reperfusion of the&#xD;
coronary artery to the salvaged cardiomyocytes. However, these strategies may cause myocardial reperfusion injuries.&#xD;
Therefore, a safe and effective strategy needs to be developed to improve the conventional strategies. Here, we investigated&#xD;
the pro-angiogenic effect of Ginsenoside Rb1 (Rb1) to provide the experimental basis for angiogenesis-mediated drug&#xD;
therapy of IHD. Thus, Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with either a vehicle or Rb1 at 4, 8,&#xD;
12 or 16 μM for 24 h. A model of hindlimb ischemia was established using C57BL/6J mice. In sham-operated mice, only the&#xD;
femoral artery was isolated without ligation whereas the other operations and supplementation control group were consistent.&#xD;
The mice in the supplementation group were injected with Rb1 (50 mg/kg body wt./day) for 7 days. The results indicated&#xD;
that Rb1 promotes cell proliferation, adhesion, migration and tube formation in the HUVECs in a dose-dependent manner.&#xD;
The ED50 of Rb1 to improve cell adhesion is 8 μM. In mice, Rb1 promoted angiogenesis after the ligation of the femoral&#xD;
artery and ameliorated the ischemic conditions. Intriguingly, more blood flow recovery was observed in the Rb1&#xD;
supplemented mice than in the vehicle-treated mice (0.85 ± 0.05 vs. 0.71±0.10 on day 3; 0.94±0.10 vs. 0.75±0.08 on day 7).&#xD;
In HUVECs, Rb1 increased the phosphorylation of STAT3 and JAK, which may be the mechanism through which Rb1&#xD;
mitigates IHD. Moreover, our results confirmed that Rb1mitigates IHD potentially by activating the JAK-STAT3 pathway.&#xD;
Further clinical trials are warranted to verify the clinical implications of Rb1.

      <title>Effect of electrical stimulation on oxidative stress in tissues in a rat model with incision wound</title>

Abstract: Electrical stimulation (ES) are known to have beneficial effects in wound healing. However, the effect of electrical&#xD;
stimulation in wound theraphy on the oxidant and antioxidant levels of various tissues in the body remains unclear. Here, we&#xD;
investigated the effects of electrical stimulation on the oxidative stress capacity of tissues in a rat model with a surgical&#xD;
incision wound on the lateral line of the femoral region. Rats divided in two groups: control and ES group. A longitudinal&#xD;
skin incision was made only from the right lateral line of all rats. ES was applied 200 μs, 20 Hz, 2mA for 20 min during&#xD;
15 days. Some oxidative stress parameters (malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (rGSH), glucose-6-phosphate&#xD;
dehydrogenase (G6PD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT)) in tissues (brain, heart, kidney, liver,&#xD;
testis, gastrocnemius and quadriceps femoris muscle) were obtained spectrophotometrically. The ES reduced oxidative&#xD;
stress by decreasing MDA and simultaneously increasing different antioxidants in different tissues. The results suggest that&#xD;
incision wound could induce oxidative stress in tissues and electrical stimulation post-incision wound may have&#xD;
ameliorative effect.

Abstract: Phage based therapeutics have shown promising results against the infections caused by the drug resistant bacteria. To combat the problem of antibiotic resistance posed by diarrhoeagenic E. coli, here, we identified and characterized 38 E. coli phages which were isolated from 70 solid sources (goat-faeces and soil). The in vitro lytic range of phage isolates (n=38) against 439 isolates of E. coli was found between 16 and 53%. Three phage isolates with highest host range showed lytic efficacy against 53, 48 and 46% of E. coli isolates, respectively. A preparation with above three phages was developed, and the phages of the preparation were found stable at wide range of temperature, pH and chloroform treatment. Endotoxin content of the preparation was found below the threshold level and it also passed safety and sterility tests. a total of 40 diarrheic goat kids were administered orally with the therapeutic phage preparation for two days twice daily. Total 21 diarrheic goat-kids were successfully treated using the therapeutic phage preparation, whereas 19 kids could not be treated (success rate: 52.5%; 21/40). The results of the current study provide insight for using lytic bacteriophages for therapeutic interventions against drug resistant E. coli responsible for colibacillosis in neonatal goat kids.

Abstract: The white willow, Salix alba L., rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, is traditionally used for its antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory potential in Algeria. As part of the ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants in Setif region in Algeria, in the present study, we assessed the safety profile of S. alba barks methanol (SAME) and aqueous (SAQE) extracts, their phytoconstituents, and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH), reducing power and hydroxyl radical tests assays. HPLC analysis identified 16 compounds in each extract with different concentrations. Gallic acid, syringic acid and cinnamic acid were high in the aqueous extract, while the methanol extracts were rich in chlorogeni cacid, catechin, methyl gallate, pyrocatechol, rutin, ferulic acid, naringenin, taxifolin and kaempferol. The extracts showed significant reducing power, DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging effects. In vivo tests showed a strong effect on carrageenan-induced paw edema after 5 h with an inhibition of 88.62 and 87.56% for SAME and SAQE (500 mg/kg), respectively. The extracts also at 500 mg/kg showed significant inhibition of xylene-induced ear edema of 57.81% with SAME 67.18% with SAQE. The results have shown that the methanol and aqueous extracts of the barks of S. alba had no toxic effect on biochemical parameters as well as the organ weights and behaviour. It indicates that S. alba could be a promising source of anti-inflammatory agent.
