Abstract: Many concrete structures such as dams, canals, roads and floors are required to have abrasion resistant. Aggregates play an important role on strength characteristics and abrasion resistance of concrete. Also compressive strength has a decisive influence on abrasion. In this study, hematite is used as replacement aggregate for the purpose. This study investigates effects of different concentrations (10-50% replacement) of hematite on mechanical properties of concrete. Water/cement ratio and cement content is kept constant as 0.42 and 400 kg/m3, respectively. It was observed that hematite – a material with higher density and higher hardness than cement – will increase both the compressive strength and the wear resistance depending on hematite content in the mixture. Concrete mixes with adequate workability have been produced. Correlation between hematite content-compressive strength and wear loss is equated, and the equation representing wear as a function of cement content and hematite content provides a high agreement with the experimental results.
