| Abstract: | The link between solar flares and geomagnetic storms is: Solar flare, associated coronal mass ejection (CME) leading to the subsequent interplanetary CME (ICME) which follows and engulfs the Earth and its geo-effectiveness due to a large negative Bz component of the ICME magnetic field B. During the giant flare of 15 February 2011, the last link, namely a substantial negative Bz, was absent and hence, only a very weak geomagnetic storm resulted. |
