Abstract: A simple and highly sensitive spectrophotometric procedure for the determination of silver has been developed. This procedure is based on the extraction of silver-1, 10-phenanthroline-Rosebengal complex into chloroform. This ternary ion-association complex absorbs maximally at 570 nm and is stable for 24 h. Silver concentration as low as 0.02 ppm can be reliably determined. The method is precise, sensitive (ε = 1.73×105 1 mol-1  cm-1) and has been applied to various environmental samples like river water and plating effluents.
