Abstract: The growth of Spirulina platensis in terms of dry biomass was evaluated in standard (CFTRI) medium supplemented with different concentration (10 to 60%) of petha (Benincasa hispida) waste extract (PWE) and under 3-set of culture conditions, viz., temperature, pH, agitation and light intensity. In all the 3-set of culture conditions, the best growth was found in treatment-3 (T 3) having 30% PWE. The maximum growth rate measured in terms of biomass (dry wt) and chlorophyll a content was recorded as 2.337 g/L and 21.209 mg/g, respectively, where cultures were illuminated under 3 Klux fluorescent light at 30±2°C, pH 9.5±0.1 and agitated for 2 min, thrice a day. The results showed that the growth was affected by all the environmental factors, i.e., light intensity, pH, temperature and agitation. However, the effect of temperature dominates the other factors. These results suggested that favourable culture conditions during Spirulina culture could be instrumental for good biomass and chlorophyll production in petha waste medium.
