Two stable inorganic ion exchangers, antimony(III) selenite and antimony(III) tungstate, have been synthesised and characterised and the effects of size and charge of the exchanging ion on the exchange capacity have been studied and the Kd values for 11 metal ions in demineralised water have been determined. The effect of temperature on ion exchange capacity and of electrolyte concentration on distribution coefficients for some metal ions have  been studied. The uptake sequence shown by antimony( III) selenite is  Th4+>Hg2+>Pb2+>Mg2+>Ca2+>Cu2+ >Zn2+>Ni2+>Co2+  and that by antimony(III) tungstate is Cd2+>Pb2+>Hg2+>B2+>Th4+>Cu2+>Ni2+>Zn2+>Mg2+. Successful separation of Hg2+ from Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Ca2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ on antimony(III) selenite and separation of  Zn2+-Pb2+, Mg2+-Pb2+, Cu2+ -Pb2+, Zn2+ -Hg2+ and Cd2+-Hg2+ on antimony( III) tungstate have also been carried out.en_US
