Abstract: Copper oxide supported on alumina is used as catalyst for the decomposition of 2-propanol using microcatalytic pulse technique in the temperature range 280-360°C. The magnetic moments of Al2O3 catalysts show the dependence of their magnetic properties on the copper content and the calcination temperature. The results show that dehydrogenation and dehydration activities are observed on these samples. The acid sites represent the active fraction of the surface on which dehydration proceeds whereas CuO site is the one used for dehydrogenation. The total activity (dehydrogenation and dehydration) is described using BassettHabgood's kinetics, where the rate-controlling step is the surface reaction. The mechanism of dehydrogenation and dehydration of 2-propanol on the investigated samples is also discussed.
