Various N-substituted pyridinedicarboximides 2-4 have been prepared. Condensation of ethylenediamine with pyridinedicarboxylic anhydride 1 affords the bis(N-methylenepyridinedicarboximide) 5. Reaction of 1 with o-phenylenediamine gives the fused benzimidazolopyrrolopyridine derivative 6. Condensation of 4 with aromatic aldehydes furnishes the corresponding chalcones. 10, which on reaction with hydrazine derivatives yielded the corresponding pyrazoline products 11. The antimicrobial activity of some of these compounds has also been studied. The screening results show that only compounds 2 and 3 exhibit moderate activity against different strains of bacteria.en_US
