Abstract: Nucleophilic second-order rate constants, knms, for the reaction of n-butylamine, piperidine and pyrrolidine with ionized pheyl salicylate, PS-, show a nonlinear decrease with increase in the content of CH3CN in mixed aqueous solvents at < 60% (v/v)CH3CN. The values of knms remain almost unchanged with change in the content of CH3CN at > 60 % (v/v) CH3CN. Effects of mixed CH3CN-H2O solvents on pKa of  leaving group, phenol, and protonated amine nucleophile are concluded to be the major factors affecting knms values.
