| Abstract: | 7-Hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin 1 on treatment with p-phenylenediamine gives 1-(p-aminophenyl)-4-methyl-7-hydroxy-carbostyril 2 which reacts with aromatic aldehydes affording 1-(p-arylidenophenyl)-4-methyl-7-hydroxycarbostyril 3. Interaction of 3 with aromatic amine in presence of anhyd. ZnCI2 results in the formation of 1-(p-arylidenophenyl)-4-methyl-7-arylaminocarbostyril 4 which undergoes cyclisation with sulphur and iodine giving 1-(p-arylidenophenyl )-2-oxo-4-methylpyrido[b]phenothia-zines 5. The antidiabetic and antiviral activities of 5 have been reported. |
