Abstract: The preferred conformations of N-benzoyl-2,6-diphenylpiperidin-4-ones have been predicted by comparing the spectral data of these compounds with those of the parent piperidones. Non-chair conformations have been proposed for the N-benzoylpiperidones since the A1,3 strain between the carbonyl group of the benzoyl group and the α-phenyls will be minimum for this conformation which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies of N-bnzoyl-3-ethyl-2,6-diphenylpiperidin-4-one.
