The contribution of man-made noise sources as intentional and unintentional radiators to the electromagnetic environment is critically reviewed considering the noise characteristics and the associated biological effects. The role of emissions of NOx from lightning is examined for the free troposphere. Different results obtained on (i) estimates of NO (ii) estimates of the amount of nitrogen fixed by lightning and (iii) theoretical and experimental yields of trace gases generated by lightning have been compared. Emphasis is also laid on the role of lightning in the evolution of life, and on the biological effects of atmospherics originating in lightning discharges.en_US
