Abstract: Limitations of Hertz theory of contact to predict the pressure distribution in involute spur gear contact problem have been established by conducting 3-D photoelastic experiments. An approximate simplified non-Hertzian approach has been applied to predict the pressure distribution in such contact problems in which motion is a combination of rolling and sliding beyond pitch point and has been found to be satisfactory.
