Abstract: Tomato is an important cash crop in India. Genetically pure seeds of tomato, Lycopersicon escuientum Mill. Var. Sun 5715, were treated with phytohormone concentrations between 1 and 500 µM and sown on wet, sterile filter paper in Petri dishes in dark, at room temperature, for 88 hr. Abscisic acid and auxins inhibited the root elongation, while gibberellic acid promoted maximum root elongation at 100 µM. Among the plant growth regulators studied for inhibition of root elongation, α-naphthalene acetic acid had maximum effect. Adenine, a precursor of cytokinins, interestingly promoted root elongation.
