Abstract: Petroleum ether extracts of 41 indigenous plants abundant in different parts of Kerala were studied for the larvicidal activity against the urban mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus and the saline water mosquito, Culex sitiens. The extracts of 18 plants showed larvicidal activity against the early fourth in star larvae of Cx. sitiens. Two plant species Piper longum and Zingiber wightianum were effective against the early fourth instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus and ex. sitiens. Therefore, the plant species P. longum and Z. wightianum were identified as potential biopesticides.
