This paper briefly describes the structure, properties, manufacture and applications of various high performance fibres such as polymeric fibres (aramids, extended chain polyethylene, and ordered polymeric fibres), carbon fibres, inorganic fibres (silicon carbide, boron, alumina and glass fibres), fibres for optical communication and electrically conducting polymeric fibres. Various other industrial fibres are also considered. Some issues related to the compressive and tensile properties of these fibres are also discussed.en_US
