Abstract: Research is in progress to quantify the effects of varying the aggressiveness of harvesting, ginning and mill machinery upon fiber properties, spinning performance and yarn quality. In two complementary studies, the effects of the interaction of harvesting severity and gin cleaning systems on the one hand, and gin and mill cleaning interactions on the other, have been studied. The initial results suggest that the influence of harvesting treatment on mill performance may be suppressed by the ginning process. The effect of one lint cleaner on the non-lint content of lint is greater than that of three cleaning points in the blow room or increased seedcottoncleaning. Little changes in yarn quality or overall spinning performance were observed except when a very aggressive carding treatment was used.
