Complexes of Cr(III), Mn(III), Fe(III), VO(IV), Zr(IV) and UO2(VI) with Schiff base derived from 2-hydroxy-5-chloroacetophenone and isonicotinoyl hydrazide (HCAIH) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductance, electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The HCAIH acts as monobasic bidentate ON donor towards Cr(III), Fe(III), and Zr(IV) monobasic tridentate ONO donor towards U02(VI) and dibasic tridentate ONO donor towards Mn(III) and VO(IV). The Mn(III) complex has been assigned square pyramidal and the VO(IV) complex has been assigned dimeric square pyramidal structure while all other complexes are octahedral. TG data shows that first order kinetics in all complexes and thermal activation energies have also been calculated by using Broido method. The antimicrobial activities of the ligand and its metal complexes have been studied by screening the compounds against various microorganisms and the results have been compared.en_US
