Abstract: 2-[α-Benzoylamino-β-2-thienylvinyl]benzoxazin-4(3H)-one 3 undergoes ring opening reaction on treatment with primary and secondary amines affording the compounds 4a-c, 5 and 6a,b. Treatment of the title compound with formamide and hydrazine hydrate at elevated temperature gives rise to quinazolinone derivatives 7 and 8. Interestingly, the vicinal aminobenzyl alcohols on treatment with 3 undergo ring opening reaction giving rise to compounds 12a-c and the newly unexpected benzoxazine 13a,b with molar ratios 1:1 and 1 :2, respectively.
