Abstract: Tungsten oxide thin films were deposited from an aqueous ammonium metatungstate solution by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) technique onto amorphous glass and glassy carbon substrates at 250°C. The films were further annealed at 400°C for 2 and 6 h. The Rutherford back scattering (RBS) technique was used to examine the composition of these films. The as-deposited films were hydrated amorphous and oxygen deficient, and the amount of hydration decreased with increase in annealing time. To study gas sensing property, a catalysing layer of Pt was sputtered onto WO3 films. The electrical resistivity and optical transmittance of Pt/WO3 samples in presence of H2 and O2 gases were studied. It was found that the asdeposited amorphous, hydrated samples exhibited better gas sensing property. The mechanism of modulation of these properties is also discussed.
