Abstract: Hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) prepolymer of different functionality distribution prepared by free radical mechanism at Chemical Engineering Complex, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre,  Thiruvananthapuram, was reacted with toluene diisocyanate (TDI), a curator, at varying stoichiometric ratio (r) equal to 0.8 and 0.9 without and with low molecular weight diol and triol to form polyurethane networks. Total percentage of low molecular weight diol and triol was kept at 1.2% of HTPB prepolymer by weight. Further, the amount of low molecular weight diol was varied from 0% to 1.2% in the mixed system. Thus prepared polyurethane networks were characterized for crosslink density (Ve), tensile strength (Ts), and % elongation at break (ϵb). The network properties such as Ve and a parameter, effective chain length (Lx) were computed using the model of Marsh et al. Excellent correlations between Ts and Ve, ϵb and Lx with very good correlation coefficients (0.95 to 0.99) were found. These correlations could be used as predictive tools to arrive at the desired properties from polyurethane networks.
