Abstract: The temperature dependence of shear and bulk modulus of three important oxides, CaO, MgO, SrO, which form part of earth's lower mantle, and non-centrosymmetric BaF2 crystalli sing in the fluorite structure, have been evaluated using a simple technique involving the use of well known thermodynamic relations. Boehler and Kennedy (B-K) approximation, that the product of volume thermal expansion coefficient and bulk modulus remains constant, is not used because it is contrary to the experimental observations for a number of non-centrosymmetric solids. The earlier methods using potential model approach involve several approximations and are structure dependent. The nature of potential not only introduces several limitations but also requi res heavy computational work. Further, results using different repulsive potential forms do not agree. The method used in this paper is applicable to all systems of solids at all temperatures regard less of their structure. With the help of simple thermodynamical relations, the variation of bulk modulus (K) and shear modulus C with temperature has been successfully explained.
