Abstract: Compositions of polycrystalline ferrites, ZnxMg1-xFe2-yNdyO4 (x = 0.00, 0.20, 0.40, 0.60, 0.80 and 1.00; y = 0.00 and 0.10), have been prepared by standard ceramic method. On characterization by standard tools like X-ray diffraction, SEM and IR absorption, the formation of single phase cubic spinels has been confirmed. Dielectric constant (ϵ') and dielectric loss (tanδ) were measured with variation of applied frequency in the range from 20 Hz to 1 MHz at room temperature. The plots of ϵ' and tanδ show sharp dispersion at lower frequencies and almost level off at higher frequencies. This is attributed to the interfacial polarization. From compositional dependence study, it was found that the dielectric constant (ϵ') follows increasing trend with increasing zinc concentration whereas decreasing trend with Nd3+ substitution. This is explained by conduction mechanism wherein population of hopping electrons at crystallographically equivalent site, octahedral (B) site, is considered.
