Silica sols were prepared at the optimal values of precursors like tetramethoxysilane (TMOS):methanol (MeOH):water (1M NH4OH) = 1:20:4, respectively. In order to prepare lead titanate ceramics in porous SiO2 network system (~90% air and 10% SiO2); lead acetate was initially dissolved in acetic acid and an equimolar amount of titanium sopropoxide was added to it dropwise with constant stirring. The mixed precursors (starting material lead titanate ceramics) were added drop wise to silica sol and further stirred for 15 min. This led to the formation of gel. After gelation, alcogel was dried supercritically in an autoclave (critical pressure, Pc=74 bars and critical temperature; Tc =247°C) within 5 h and the autoclave was depressurized within one hour. The resulting aerogel was ground and characterized by XRD and IR indicating the formation of lead titanate ceramics. It has been observed, from the XRD pattern, that the grain size of PbTiO3 is -88 nm (nanoparticle size). en_US
