Abstract: The texture analysis methods for the objective assessment of appearance change in jute-based fabric surfaces due to progressive abrasion have been examined with the digital image analysis technique. The various statistical features of three standard approaches of texture analysis, viz. spatial gray level dependence method (SGLDM), gray level difference method (GLDM) and neighbourhood gray level dependence method (NGLDM), have been examined here. It is found that the textural feature SGLDM-inertia or GLDM-contrast may be evaluated for the quantitative assessment of abrasive damage of jute-based fabric surfaces. The changes in surface appearance due to progressive abrasion in case of jute-based fabrics studied have been found to be much faster than that for the cotton fabric under the same condition of testing. This objective method of testing of the change in surface appearance due to degradation or wear will be useful for the performance evaluation of such fabrics along with evaluation of other quality parameters like tensile and dimensional properties for quality assurance.
