Abstract: The comparative performance of jute bags seamed in Herakle sewing machine (Stitch type: overedge chain stitch, No. 502) and Hemming machine (Stitch type: double locked chain stitch, No. 401) has been studied at laboratory and mill levels with a view to improve seam strength at a reduced cost. It has been observed that stitch type 401 gives higher seam strength than the stitch type 502 and that the seam strength of bags increases with the increase in stitch density up to 12 stitches per dm. The same trend is observed for seam efficiency also. The drop test performance of the experimental bags is found to be excellent. It has also been observed that the thread consumption in stitch type 401 is significantly lower than that in stitch type 502. Stitch type 401 may further be applied for joining the cuts (fabric) in the cloth cutting machine to achieve quality products. The results obtained from the experiments clearly indicate the suitability of double locked chain stitches for seaming operation of jute bags in regard to improved seam performance.
