| Abstract: | The kinetics of phase transfer catalyzed free radical polymerization of butyl methacrylate (BMA) using potassium peroxomonosulphate (water-soluble initiator) coupled with phase transfer catalyst viz., tetrabutylphosphonium chloride (TBPC) has been investigated in ethyl acetate-water biphase system at 50 ± 0.1oC. The rate of polymerization increases with increase in concentrations of BMA, PMS and TBPC. The order with respect to monomer has been found to be unity. A square root order has been observed for phase transfer catalyst and an order of 0.7 with respect to initiator. A suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed to account for the experimental data and its significance is discussed. |
