Abstract: A simple method for speeding up phase transfer catalyzed reactions has been discovered. It has been found that if the reaction is carried out in a metallic vessel made of good conductor of electricity, the product yield in a specified time is increased many fold. The effect has been demonstrated by conducting two oxidation reactions, namely, oxidation of benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde by acidic potassium permanganate using cetyl trimethylammonium bromide as phase transfer catalyst, in a platinum crucible instead of a glass vessel. It has been argued that this observation is a consequence of electrochemical nature of phase transfer catalyzed reactions.
