| Abstract: | Advances in modern biotechnology are being increasingly applied to product development for improved healthcare, agricultural outputs and environment. The biotechnology industry has become a multi-billion dollar industry. The extensive use of recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology in industry, often entails release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the environment. There is a global concern that uncontrolled release of GMOs may bring about adverse effects on environment, and health of humans and animals. There is a strong support among nations that internationally binding biosafety regulations are needed for orderly application of biotechnology that ensures safety to health and environment. The national and international initiatives towards this goal have been outlined, discussed and the need for capacity strengthening of developing countries, in this area, are emphasized. |
